Sunny just buried his face into the mattress. The person sighed and pulled the blankets over his head. Basil, Kel and Aubrey want you to come to the treehouse with them!” He shook his head firmly. “Go away!” Sunny called out, muffled by the layers of blankets. “Sunny? Are you ok?” He felt something heavy sit on the end of his bed. Under the covers was uncomfortably hot and stuffy, but he didn’t get up. He let himself wallow in self-pity for a while. Who was going to protect him from bullies at school? Who was going to listen to him ramble while planting new flowers? Who was going to sit and help him make flower crowns? He couldn’t leave Basil! Who would Basil have? ![]() He lay on his bed, burying himself under the covers. Because if it did, he would leave all his friends, his house, his room, and practically his whole life behind. Sunny almost didn’t want Kel’s birthday to come. He wanted to have a small party where they all swam in the lake. Kel wanted to have a party in the hangout spot, with a homemade cake, provided by Mari and Hero. At least they would be staying for his birthday. They would be moving soon, leaving 3 days after Kel’s birthday. The thought of having to live in a house that wasn’t this one was almost painful to think about. He wanted his room with his bed and his friends right next door. Tears spilled down his cheeks, making his room blurry. Sunny tried to stop his crying before it really started, but it was no use. He needed to clear his head where no one would find him. “Ok…thanks, Mari.” Basil ran out the door before any of the tears in his eyes could get the chance to fall. He didn’t want his best friend to leave him! He didn’t want the boy he liked to leave him. “If you want to tell him, do it soon! We’re moving away in a few weeks, remember? We leave a few days after Kel’s birthday.” That made him feel even worse. Bury this deep inside him, so far down there was no way he’d ever think about it again. He wanted to just rot in his own feelings, never wanting to get too close to Sunny in case he started to like him anymore. There was absolutely no way Sunny liked Basil! There was absolutely no way Sunny liked boys. “I think you've got a crush on Sunny! You might not, but it certainly sounds that way!” Mari’s words should have been comforting, he knew what he had been feeling, but it just made his heart sink even deeper. “Do you want to maybe kiss him?” Basil looked down again, his face heating up. “Do you want to hold his hand?” Basil nodded again. “Hmm…well, do you want to hug him all the time?” Basil nodded. M-my head feels weird and my cheeks feel hot and I just really want to be around him all the time!” Basil looked at the ground. “I, I uh…I keep feeling weird whenever I see Sunny. Was there really any better person to ask? Mari was basically his older sister. ![]() ![]() “Of course! What do you need?” Mari smiled warmly. He was standing in the kitchen with Mari, and this was the perfect time to ask her about Sunny. He had just been dropping Sunny off, but he went straight to his room. ![]() “Mari? Can I talk to you?” Basil asked nervously. Stats: Published: Updated: Words: 11207 Chapters: 5/?
